We three kings of Orient are
Andrew Carter’s arrangement of We three kings of Orient are for SATB choir (with divisions at the end) and organ is a refreshingly original exploration of this well-known carol. The verses sung by Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar (soloists or a small group) are each provided with their own distinctive accompaniment (colourful organ registrations are prerequisite!) and either an unaccompanied refrain with soprano descant (melody in the alto part) or ethereally accompanied refrain complete with ‘a little r.h. glitter’. A thunderous organ introduction announces the final verse (canon between upper and lower voices) and return of the first refrain (accompanied this time) before a brief, yet haunting coda draws this imaginative setting to its close.
