Three Variants on Eriskay Love Lilt
Andrew Carter’s Three Variants on Eriskay Love Lilt (a traditional Hebridean melody popularised by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser, 1857-1930) were written for the concert organist Gordon Stewart in 2014. Initially provided with a flowing accompaniment of quaver sixths, the familiar melody then appears in canon before floating above an evocative ‘glittering sea’ in the second variation. Contrasting solos accompanied by ‘distant horns’ bring this tranquil yet beguiling piece to its close. Published: 2020. Duration: 3′.
