They that go down to the sea in ships
Andrew Carter’s setting of They that go down to the sea in ships (Psalm 107, vv 23-30) for SATB choir (with divisions) and organ was commissioned in 1994 by the choir of the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook. Imaginative word painting is a common feature of most settings of this text, including those by Henry Purcell and Herbert Sumsion, but here it is employed within a new context. At the emotional volta of psalm 107, Carter has inserted two verses of a hymn (Lord of the ocean with text by the composer), so that listeners can imagine what sort of supplications might be offered ‘when they cry to the Lord in their trouble’. The remaining verses of psalmody are then accompanied by the ebb and flow of organ strings before Carter’s hymn returns to provide a powerful conclusion. Published: 1995. Duration: 9′.
