The Magi
The Magi is an Epiphany carol for unaccompanied SATB choir with Treble/Soprano, Tenor and Bass/Baritone solos. Commissioned by Robert Sharpe for the 2010 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at York Minster, Andrew Carter chose to explore the differing traditions surrounding the Wise Men: their number, their origins, their journey and their gifts. All four verses begin with a homophonic setting of the same haunting melody before slowing to allow each soloist to describe their respective gifts in quasi-recitative passages. The final verse of this carol concludes with a bold statement of the phrase “Christ (is) the morning star” (famously inscribed above the tomb of the Venerable Bede in Durham), which is then repeated softly with awe and wonder.
