The Cloths of Heaven
The Cloths of Heaven is a setting of words by W B Yeats for unaccompanied SATB choir (with divisions and soprano solo). Andrew Carter uses particularly rich homophonic textures at the beginning of this piece to illuminate the embroidered cloth ‘enwrought with golden and silver light’, before highlighting individual threads contrapuntally. At the poignant conclusion of this evocative piece, the first person narrative voice of Yeats’ poem is revealed to be that of a solo soprano whose tender supplication floats above hushed strains before fading away into silence.
