Missa Sancti Pauli

Andrew Carter’s Missa Sancti Pauli was commissioned by John Scott to mark the tercentenary of St Paul’s Cathedral in 1997. Comprising Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei, and liturgical acclamations, Missa Sancti Pauli requires double choir (with some further divisions) and organ. The musical language is by turns mysterious, reflective, joyful, extrovert, impassioned, warm and glowing – with undercurrents of Paris (especially in the organ part) and echoes of Strauss, Debussy, and Britten, but ultimately all Andrew Carter in the way the threads are drawn together.
