Down in yon forest
Andrew Carter’s arrangement of Down in yon forest for unaccompanied SATB choir (with multiple divisions) has ‘a delightfully fresh quality without becoming silly’. At the beginning of this atmospheric carol, a group of singers (divided into six parts) imitate the hypnotic effect of bells chiming “ding” and “dong” simultaneously. The traditional melody of Down in yon forest is then allowed to float above its choral accompaniment without interruption. Andrew Carter maintains a lilting duple time momentum throughout verses two, three, and four, but deliberately disrupts the flow at ‘born this night’ in verse five to create a spine-tingling climax.
