Dives and Lazarus

Andrew Carter’s arrangement of Dives and Lazarus (Child Ballad 56) for SATB choir (with divisions) and piano or organ will enliven any Christmas concert. The parable of the rich man (known in this version as Diverus) and Lazarus from Luke 16:19–16:31 is brought to life here (literally!) through imaginative word painting. Basses will particularly enjoy their starring role as serpents slithering around in thirds during the fourth verse. Familiar to anyone acquainted with the Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus by Ralph Vaughan Williams or the hymn tune “Kingsfold”, the traditional melody of Dives and Lazarus has never been heard quite like this before.
